About Jill Meager

Wildlife and wild places are at the core of my art practice. I spent my early years roaming the countryside and coastlines of Scotland and the Western Isles, where the landscapes, the creatures, the light and the colours still inform much of my work.

I am best known for my single, larger than life portraits of animals and birds. But more recently I have been working on a collection of abstract paintings based on the locations I visit to find my wildlife subjects. And more recently again, I have been making animal and bird collages.

I studied modern languages at Cambridge University and it was there that I became passionate about communication in all its forms. I spent a lot of my time acting in plays, and writing sketches and reviews.

Before becoming an artist, I worked as a professional actor (among other appearances, Miss Marple, Bergerac, Taggart, Goodbye Mr Chips, The Secret Servant, The Sins of the Father, and even in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again).

And while studying at Putney School of Art and Design, I also worked as a stand-up comedian. I love telling stories through words and pictures, drawing out meaning and impact both in my art and in my work as a performance and speech coach.

“I love your appreciation for birds and all of nature, which I also hold dear. I have a real reverence for the precious natural world.  Your art captures the essence of the absolute beauty of your subjects and it induces a wonderful feeling on viewing.”

“Jill’s technical skill is matched by her wisdom, wit and passionate engagement with the world around her and it is these qualities which are the underpinnings of her work and why every piece she makes is simply, viscerally, compellingly beautiful.”
